AUTORS: Ytaelena Lopez, Bruno Lopez, Edmundo de Marchena and Martina Castro.

With the colaboration of Jeff Barhoum

Materials: Recycled pipes, balloons, canvas, LED lights and small sound system. (2011)

TO SEE THE LIGHT is a interactive open installation inspired by the concept of “illumination” as epiphany in two senses: as a spiritual revelation (inside to outside) and inspiration (outside to inside).

The people have the opportunity to interact with the space by writing down their enlightment experiences or epiphanies and sharing their wisdom in our “Espacio Sacro”.
We want to create a space that allows people to connect to their spiritual side and achieve their own enlightenment.

HOW TO INTERACT:

1- Try to answer one of the following question:

When did you see the light? When it was your latest AHA moment? What did you learn?
When it was the last time that someone change your mind about something important?
¿Cuándo vistes la luz? ¿Qué aprendistes?

2- Take one of the tags and write your answer.

3- Go inside the space
Listen to the voice...
Find your Light...
Contemplate...
Take your time...

4- Hang your tag inside if you like.

5- Leave in PEACE, the LIGHT is already inside you.

If you fell the soul of the verse when you repeat it, you are infected.

THE LIGHT OF THE DEPARTED ILLUMINATE OUR PATH
By Ytaelena Lopez and Bruno Lopez

Day of the death exhibition
SOMARTS, San Francisco, CA
October 2009

Art Explossion, San Francisco, Ca
November 2009 - March 2010

City Art Gallery, San Francisco, CA
April 2010

The words received by the dead ones are transformed into light that guides the living in their path.

We are who we are because many people have left their mark on us, including some who are already dead. But they live in us and their words enlighten us in many ways. And that light is possible because they came before and they use their valuable time to touch our lives. That is why we remember them. It is not about the length of time, but how it is lived.

But also, we can do a tribute to the dead because we are alive here, right now. Such privilege, isn't it? We have the opportunity to do it right, to think about regrets and to leave our imprints on the mind of the people that love us... just because we are breathing.

The messages come from the post-it written by nearly 900 people during installation "Virgin of Diversity." At that time the public was invited to write messages to their dead ancestors and friends. The result was moving and you can see here at Flickr

These messages -written in the post-it® was transferred to rice paper to be put in the lamp.

The installation is complemented with a sound element: "the lesson that the death taught us". This is a recording of 5 people that was close to the death in direct or indirect way. This people tell us how their life changed after that.

Now I will ask you:

What valuable lesson for your life have you learned, after to be close to the death?

I answered the question in the audio. Now is your turn.

A collaborative piece by “Los Hermanos” (Ytaelena & Bruno Lopez)

2010

Recycled wood, soil, compost, plants, black light, sound system and Ytaelena’ sculture (cell scan pictures, acrylic, fluorescent paint, resin).

TRAPPED is an interactive installation inspired by oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and the earthquake in Chile. The installation recreates a cave or cavern, from which you can hear a voice asking for help. The public is attracted to those weak calls and enters the cave, which narrows into a small hole where only only arm can get it. The installation is dark except for a halo of light at the end, emanating from the Earth cells (pictured in a sculpture made especially for this installation). The subtle smell of fresh compost reflects what could be the smell of Mother Earth ... or the decomposition of organic matter. When the person inserts his arm into the hole, he discovers another hand waiting, but immersed in a mixture of soil and compost.

Description of the project (Technical details)

Measurement : 4'-0" WIDE x 7'-0" LONG x 9'-0" CEILING HEIGHT.

The installation simulate a narrow cave with recycled wood (from fruit boxs) cardboard and others recycled materials. The cave narrows progressively at the end. The cave is in darkness, but you can guide yourself touching the walls.
There is a window where only the arm can enter. When the public introduces their arm, they will find a pair of hands buried in the ground, surrounded by ferns (that can lives in the darkness). A pale light, like moon, emanates from a fluorescent sculpture made with pictures of cancer cells.
In the background you can hear the soundtrack of an earthquake, with cries for help, crying, landslides and fire included.
We will place a pot filled with fresh compost which sow fast growth seeds and plant seedlings. These plants will grow over the time of the piece.
These plants grow over the duration of the piece. In addition, the smell of compost may be perceived by the public.

Computer Science for Kids

Lauren Ipsum is lost in Userland. She knows where she is, or where she's going, but maybe not at the same time. The only way out is through Jargon-infested swamps, gates guarded by perfect logic, and the perils of breakfast time at the Philosopher's Diner. With only her wits and the help of a chameleon named Xor, Laurie has to map her own way home.

Lauren Ipsum is a children's story about computer science. In 20 chapters and ~35K words, she encounters dozens of ideas from timing attacks to algorithm design, the subtle power of names, and how to get a fair flip out of even the most unfair coin.

The book is already written by Carlos Bueno, and I am working on the illustrations and layout. We've been working on this project over nights & weekends for about a year and a half.

Get signed copies and illustrations on Kickstarter!
In return for a signed pre-sale copy of the book, your pledges will go towards translating the book into Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages.

The Characters
Lauren Ipsum, a little girl who is lost in Userland.
Xor, a colorblind Chameleon.
Winsome Losesome, who may or may not be a pirate.
Colonel Trapp, who may or may not be a villain.
N. Veterate Tinker, purveyor of fine Algorithms.
Eponymous Bach, who composes Ideas then puts her name on them.
Fresnel Goodglass, who makes Ideas smaller.
Achilles the Logician & Tortoise, a humble tortoise.
...plus the Jargon, the Round Robins, the Byzantine Generals, the Elegants...
